28th Council Meeting (Online)

The 28th UNIW Council Meeting was convened online on May 16, 2020, with the participation of nearly 20 council members from different countries.

Together with council members, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Islamic geography, the efforts of UNIW members regarding the pandemic, and the challenges awaiting the post-pandemic world and Muslim communities were addressed.

Commencing with the opening address of Secretary General Atty. Ali Kurt and his reading of the meeting agenda, participants shared information regarding the COVID-19 situation in their respective countries and their pandemic-related relief activities following general evaluations.

UNIW Secretary General Atty. Ali Kurt read the meeting agenda, noting that the entire world, including Islamic countries, was locked down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that the agenda items encompassed developments following the 27th Council Meeting, the status of UNIW members during the pandemic, worldwide changes to be experienced alongside the pandemic, and consultations on what UNIW and the Islamic World can accomplish. The Secretary General expressed that the pandemic actually provided a novel vision, and by developing this digital system, council members could gather online more frequently. In this framework, he highlighted evaluating upcoming days and determining strategic initiatives as the paramount agenda item. He shared that Young UNIW President Serdar Bayram and his team had been conducting online trilingual (Turkish, Arabic, English) meetings with youth representatives across different global regions.

Council members emphasized that Muslim brothers and sisters in countries such as Palestine, Rohingya, Syria, and Yemen must not be forgotten during this pandemic process. They recommended that UNIW address a formal letter to the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the necessity of conducting Muslim funeral and burial procedures in compliance with Islamic principles.

UNIW Humanitarian Relief Platform President Mr. Musab Aydın proposed establishing a dedicated health commission under the UNIW umbrella.
