Humanitarian Response Mechanism Awareness Workshop
The 'Capacity Building for NGOs' workshop organized by AFAD and UN-OCHA took place in Istanbul with the participation of UNIW.
The training workshop titled 'Capacity Building for NGOs', determined as an action plan between the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) to enhance NGO capacities regarding international humanitarian mechanisms and country-based pooled funds, was held in Istanbul on July 16-17, 2019. UNIW Deputy General Coordinator Ahmet Akay Azak attended the program.
AFAD President Dr. Mehmet Güllüoğlu delivered the opening speech, emphasizing: 'We continuously contemplate and develop how we can better equip our society to confront challenges and crises. This program directly reflects this vision.'
Dr. Iyad Nasr, Head of the UN-OCHA Regional Office, stated: 'We have received tremendous support from Turkey regarding strategic cooperation with AFAD. We strongly desire this partnership to expand not only at the state level but also through national and international NGOs, whose dedicated fieldwork gives us all great motivation.'
The two-day training program covered the UN Humanitarian System, Core Humanitarian Principles, Needs Assessment and Analysis, Humanitarian Needs Overview, Emergency Response Planning, Accountability to Affected Populations, Civil-Military Cooperation, Information Management, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights Law, and Humanitarian Funding Mechanisms. The workshop concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony.
